Nothing is more difficult than knowing whether or not we’re
really on the cutting edge.
Money managers tell me that choosing stocks is a lot like raising
children. By the time the feedback comes in that tells you how
you did, it’s too late to do it differently.
Yet … during times of exponential change, when a multiplicity
of possible futures simultaneously co-exist, we know that
consensus reality is probably not the limousine to ride.
Robert Galvin looked back on the critical ideas that made a
significant difference in the growth of Motorola. Every single
one, he said, was at first a minority opinion, heard on the edge
of the conversation.
Any idea, on the other hand, with which everyone immediately
agreed, turned out to be wrong.
Christian or not, there is a compelling truth at the heart of the
nativity story. New truth is always born in an out of the way
place, mocked and rejected as a child of an unwed mother.
The truth is never easy to identify. There is still a group in
Iran who believe that John the Baptizer filled the bill perfectly
for the job description of “messiah.” He proclaimed the activity
of a living God with a roundhouse right, he was outcast and
martyred for his actions by the establishment … and returned in
a way that gave renewed energy and conviction to his followers.
The truth wears a thousand masks. It always sounds outrageous at
first, and our first response is likely to be laughter, rejection
or hostility. But being what it is, the truth just keeps on
coming.
The truth is a quiet river, moving as it will, seductive and
irresistible. A light shining in the darkness that the darkness
cannot overcome.
A rich and blessed holiday season to you and yours.
